Driving/renting a car in California

  • Rent with a Visa gold and you don't have to pay for daily insurance !
  • Rent/inquire for chain if you are going to Tahoe the next week.
  • You don't need an international passport (well, so I think).
  • It's easier to rent from France as they might not accept european visa or mastercard for renting. Actually, some companies do, some don't.
  • Specific about drinving in California:
    • The red light is on the other side of the crossing !!!
    • At a 4 stop crossing, right of way is granted for the first one to reach the stop sign. If you and another car reaches at the same time, right of way for the car coming from right.
    • Don't park where you can't!:
      • Bus lane: $300
      • disabled (blue lane): $300
      • Red line: $150 (except if it's a corner: $300)
      • parking meter with no money: $40
      • Sidewalk parking: $100 (tested this you for you Jan 10th)
    • When parked in a street a bit steep, turn the wheel towards the curb (else you 'll be fined)

  • Addition from PK (Jan 12th 2005):
"You left out such novelties as Pakwan and Taqueria Cancun. and what do you really think of the Cliff House? My new firm was the architect. It just got SOUR reviews by the food critics, but the building itself is ok. A little sterile for my liking, but I like how they did the ceiling, exposed metal decking, and hanging pendant light fixtures. I took my mom there and the service was just as the critic describes... quel dommage!!"
  • Addition from Christy (Jan 12th 2005):
    "Try some Dim Sum !"
  • Addition from LK (Jan 18th 2005):
"So, my addition would be under the heading of "Shopping" with the following suggestions: Haight Street - where you will find novelty items such as pipes, jewelry, hippy attire, wigs, costumes and street fashion. For nice boutiques, try Ambiance, Behind the Post Office or Jaxx. Hayes Valley - this up and coming area has seen an increase in boutiques for young urban professionals. Azalea, Cop Copine, Ver Unica, and R.A.G (for local designers). Some other great boutiques/stores: AB Fits in North Beach Therapy on Valencia Dema on Valencia Joe Pye on Divisadero"
